There are 3 ways of getting a Taxi here in Japan.

First is in the street.

Second is to reserve or call a taxi through App.

Third is wait at a taxi stand.

Let’s talk about getting a taxi in the street first.

1. ON THE STREET

If you are going to wait on the street, as in many other places in the world, simply raise your hand or wave your arm to get their attention.

Remember these signs:

Remember that back doors of all taxis in metropolitan areas open automatically. The driver will open the door for you, so just wait until it is opened. Most drivers will expect you to sit in the back if you’re traveling alone. If there are several of you traveling and you would like to sit in the front, open the front door manually.

2. TAXI STAND

As if it wasn’t easy to find a taxi, just walking down the street, there are also taxi stands (タクシーのりば). You can find a stand in many locations such as trains stations, big hotels or in a mall.

3. RESERVE A TAXI IN ADVANCE

Reserving a taxi before you go somewhere is a great way to make sure you get a car when you need it most. Airport services also offer flat fares for certain distances. Other services will require an additional fee on top of the cab fare when you book in advance (this generally comes to about ¥420 or thereabouts).

[By phone]

These taxi services have phone operators that speak English:

Tokyo Kokusai Motorcars/東京KMタクシー

[By APP]

Simply download a taxi app. Registration is generally quick and easy. Remember to enable the GPS function on your smartphone so you can be located. Uber is not the most popular taxi service in Japan however, they are available in certain areas and are expanding the territories (Tokyo, Yokohama, Sendai, Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, Fukuoka etc.).
